Acupuncture and Infertility

Text Box: Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can improve fertility
At Mont Albert Acupuncture we can help you increase your chances of becoming pregnant with acupuncture and Chinese medicine, combined with individual nutritional advice and lifestyle modification.

Fertility is an area where acupuncture can be used very successfully. For some women, there is often only a slight imbalance of the reproductive system and often by regulating the reproductive hormones and the menstrual cycle with acupuncture, making dietary changes and addressing stress, sleep or other lifestyle issues, fertility can be restored.
For other women suffering endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, ovarian cysts or other gynaecological disorders, acupuncture can offer an effective drug free treatment or can be used in conjunction with standard medical treatments to help improve your reproductive health, increase your fertility and help you conceive naturally.

How Does Acupuncture improve fertility?
Chinese medicine has a very long history of treating women with infertility, over 2000 years in fact!
However modern scientific research is beginning to confirm what Chinese medicine practitioners have always known.
Acupuncture can:
 Improve ovarian function
 Regulate reproductive hormones
Increase blood flow to the uterus
Increase the thickness of the uterine lining to assist implantation
 Strengthen the immune system
Improve relaxation and sleep and reduce stress

Acupuncture can increase Pregnancy Rates of Couples using IVF
In February, 2008 the British Medical Journal published a review of the results of seven trials investigating the effects of acupuncture on IVF treatment and concluded that acupuncture can increase the chances of pregnancy by 65%.

What is involved?
If you are considering assisted reproduction, we recommend that you start acupuncture treatments 3 months before an IVF cycle to improve your general health and regulate your menstrual cycle and hormones to give you the optimum chance of success. Treatment once a fortnight is usually sufficient during this stage.
Once your IVF cycle has begun, treatment will focus on supporting ovarian function and thickening the uterine lining as well as minimising the side effects on the IVF drugs.
Treatment pre-transfer will help to further increase the uterine lining to assist implantation. Acupuncture at this stage can help keep you calm, relaxing the uterus to minimise uterine contractions.
After transfer, acupuncture is important to assist blood flow in the uterus and nourish embryo growth as well as continuing to reduce any uterine contractions that may lead to bleeding or miscarriage.

Acupuncture and Male Fertility
Often overlooked is the fact that over 40% of all fertility problems are due to male factors.
With the help of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, it is possible to improve the quality and quantity of sperm. Because sperm take around 3 months to mature, regular acupuncture treatment is recommended for at least 3 months to optimise the chances of a couple conceiving and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

Acupuncture, Stress and Fertility
Most people are aware that constant stress is a contributing factor to a lot of fertility issues.
Our lifestyles have become so busy and hectic, with worries and social pressures that sometimes we forget how to relax. This is where acupuncture is particularly helpful—to lower anxiety and improve sleep—therefore lowering stress hormones that can have an adverse effect on fertility. We will also recommend and help you maintain a healthy diet that can help regulate insulin levels, reduce stress hormones and have you feeling great.
